Living in Soustons

The origins of Soustons

A historic town in the Landes located halfway between Dax and the ocean, Soustons has its origins in the Gallo-Roman era. A farming and forestry village long focused on livestock breeding and exploitation of the Landes pine forest, the commune gradually developed around its lake, a 730-hectare freshwater expanse fringed by a pine forest. Today a cantonal seat, Soustons has around 8,500 permanent residents and enjoys a remarkable living environment between ocean, lake and forest.

Soustons's must-sees

Lake Soustons is the commune's focal point, prized for fishing, sailing, canoeing and boat trips. The red bridge, the 19th-century Saint-Pierre church and the weekly market bring the town centre to life. The seaside resort of Soustons-Plage, 8 kilometres from the centre, offers a large supervised ocean beach in season and borders the preserved natural dune. The Pinsolle international golf course, located nearby, rounds out the tourist offering. The commune also has a local winemaking heritage and several equestrian estates.

Living in Soustons

Soustons attracts residents seeking a peaceful setting while benefiting from quick access to the ocean, to Hossegor (15 minutes) and to Dax (15 minutes). The town offers the services of a true cantonal seat (secondary school, public services, local shops, market) while retaining a rural, lakeside character. The property market blends traditional Landes villas, contemporary lakeside houses and rural properties further inland. Nature, fishing, hunting and hiking enthusiasts find an ideal environment here, close to the coast without its seasonal crowds.
