The origins of Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains
A Landes village born in the Middle Ages at the mouth of the Adour, Vieux-Boucau saw its fate upended in the 17th century when the river changed course and turned towards Bayonne. Deprived of its maritime outlet, the town became an agricultural and forestry hamlet before reinventing itself in the 20th century as a seaside resort on the Côte d'Argent. Today home to around 1,700 permanent residents, the population multiplies tenfold during the summer season.
Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains's must-sees
The Port d'Albret sea lake, a vast expanse of salt water within the town itself, is the heart of the resort. This rare feature allows safe swimming, sailing, paddleboarding and family water activities in calm water just steps from the ocean. The large ocean beach, supervised in season, is popular with surfers and lovers of unspoilt nature. The pedestrian centre, its traditional shops and lively market maintain the village's authenticity. The seafront promenade, the cycle paths linking Soustons and Messanges, and the active tourist office are among its assets.
Living in Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains
An ideal resort for families and those seeking tranquillity, Vieux-Boucau charms with its human scale and its balance between lake, ocean and forest. The property market offers a range from apartments right on the lakefront to villas with gardens in the pine forest. More discreet and more affordable than Hossegor or Seignosse, the town attracts numerous family second homes and a growing number of active retirees. Dax station (30 minutes) and Biarritz-Pays-Basque airport (40 minutes) remain within reasonable reach.
